The Vietnamese greenfinch, Chloris monguilloti, is a small finch found only in southern Vietnam. Its main home is the Da Lat Plateau, where it lives in open montane pine forest, scrub, forest edges, and nearby secondary growth.
This bird has a sturdy cone-shaped bill, perfect for cracking seeds. Adults show a blackish head and a narrow bright yellow collar, with greenish-yellow tones in the wings and body. Females are similar but usually less brightly colored.
Vietnamese greenfinches are especially associated with pine forests, including areas with Pinus kesiya. They are found mostly at higher elevations, often around 1,050 to 1,900 meters, though records exist from lower areas as well.
Their diet includes pine seeds and other small seeds. They have also been observed catching newly emerged termites, showing that even seed-eating finches may take insects when a rich food source appears.
Although the species is currently considered Least Concern, it has a very limited range. Loss or degradation of open montane pine forest could quickly become a serious problem for this Vietnam endemic.
