The Vietnamese golden-winged laughingthrush, more commonly called the golden-winged laughingthrush, is Trochalopteron ngoclinhense. It is a rare songbird found only around Ngoc Linh Mountain in southwestern Vietnam.
This species belongs to the laughingthrush family, Leiothrichidae, a group of social Old World songbirds that are especially diverse in Asia. Laughingthrushes often have strong legs, rounded wings, and a habit of moving through dense vegetation in pairs or small groups.
The golden-winged laughingthrush lives in moist montane forest. Because it is tied to a small mountain range, its world is naturally limited, and changes to forest cover can have a large effect on the species.
Like many laughingthrushes, it is expected to feed on insects and other small invertebrates, along with berries or fruit when available. Dense mountain forest gives it food, cover, nesting places, and protection from harsh weather.
The species is listed as Endangered because of its small range and the threat of habitat loss. Protecting the forests of Ngoc Linh is essential for this bird and for the many other unusual species found in Vietnam's mountains.
