Hoopoes are unique birds that can grow to be around 10 to 12.5 inches long, and they usually weigh no more than 3 ounces. These birds are easily recognized by their tan-colored bodies and black and white striped wings. They have a thin, curved black beak and interesting black feet, with two front toes that are joined together to help them stay balanced.

One of the most famous features of hoopoes is the beautiful crest on top of their heads. This crest has bright red or orange feathers with white and black tips. Hoopoes use this eye-catching crest to communicate with each other. When they are excited, they raise the crest, and when they are relaxed, they lay the crest flat against their heads.

Hoopoes can be found in different parts of the world depending on their subspecies. They live across Asia, Europe, and Africa, and sometimes, they even make surprise appearances in Alaska. When a bird shows up outside of its usual home, this is known as vagrancy.

These adaptable birds can thrive in many kinds of environments. They can be found in open grasslands called savannas, dense primary forests, sunny forest clearings, and even in heathlands, which are areas with low-growing shrubs. Hoopoes are able to live in such a wide variety of places because they have simple needs. To be content, they just need two things: vertical surfaces with small spaces where they can build their nests, and open ground with little vegetation so they can search for food.

Hoopoes eat a wide variety of foods, making them true omnivores. Their diet includes all sorts of creatures, like spiders, lizards, ants, and beetles, as well as frogs. They also enjoy eating fruits and seeds, which provide them with essential nutrients.
